let loose

I just finished working on a rather tedious commission so I was ready to let loose. I am usually forced to tighten up to capture certain subjects when I have commission work.  I enjoy that but I LOVE painting whatever and as loose as I want.  This cow has one of those "go eat #(*$%" looks.  Hope you are not feeling that way today.  This is painted on an 11 x 14 x 2" canvas.

I loved this chick's curious stance.  While painting,
I try to simplify shapes and stroke work. It may appear to the novice that it was easy to paint.  It is a skill that comes after hours and hours of painting. When I first started painting I tortured and overworked my paintings trying to add every detail.  I knew I wanted a looser look but that did not come until after  logging in lots of easel time. The more you paint, the more confidence you build to become bolder with your strokes and knowing what to edit out.  I TRY to remember what so many of my instructors have shared and that is to think about every stroke before you apply it to the canvas.  Make it count.  Sometimes I remember.

I could not resist.  It appeared to me that the chick on the left was telling the other two something.  I bet it was just something trivial.

I spent the day at my sister and brother in law's home yesterday and they had some fairly new chicks. It was so fun to hold and watch them. I took a few (300) pictures.  I am going to have fun with some of the titles.  This one is painted on a 6 x 8 x 2" canvas.sold

 Is this a great scene or what?  This fellow and his lovely companion are always thinking of good reasons to go out for a ride around their camp house property. This is a very common scene so his wife and kids commissioned me to paint it for him for Father's day surprise.  How awesome is that? (so many questions in this post)
 This is making me want to give in to my husband's desire to get a big dog. I do not have anything against it I just remember how much work it is.  I Need to remember how much fun it is.
This is painted on a 24 x 36 x 2" canvas so that is my reason for including a second picture.  Hard to appreciate the scale without a visual. This is going to be hung over their camp house mantle.  Pure fun!sold

looking up

 I met a couple at a show in Fairhope, Alabama and they commissioned this painting.  I love the little guy looking up to his grand dad.  If you are familiar with this area you might recognize Mobile Bay and Yardhams restaurant in the background.  There is a nice park that runs alongside the bay and it is a wonderful place to walk. Especially with a beautiful grandchild. This is painted on an 11 x 14 x 2" canvas.sold

I surprised myself today when I was thinking of a title.  I do not know a lot of goose speak so when I came up with "gaggle" and then looked it up and found out that it's meaning was a flock of geese I was happily surprised.  I guess I do know some goose speak.  I took the reference photo for this painting at Lake Martin a couple of years back.  This is painted on a 20 x 40 x 2" canvas. This is painted on an 8 x 10 x 2" canvas.  I am preparing to do a show at Lake Martin Memorial day weekend.  The show is a benefit for Children's Harbor.  This will be the forth time I have participated and I always enjoy staying with a good friend and seeing lots of other folks that come out to support this great cause.  The show hours are Saturday, 9-5 and Sunday, 9-2.  The show is on the grounds of the Children's Harbor retreat that is close to the Kowaliga bridge.

Water is a blessing in so many different ways.  I will only speak about it's relaxing qualities at the moment.  As I post this, I have the window open and am listening to the rain and the creek below my home. It pleases just about all the senses....taste, touch, hearing, sight....
  The two girls in my painting are cooling off from the sun and enjoying the weightless feeling water allows. I could pretty much go on and on about the wonderful attributes of water but the soothing sounds of water are calling for a nap on the porch. This is painted on a 16 x 20 x 2" canvas.sold

Actually there is 100% chance of rain in Tupelo, MS where I am headed this Friday for the 43rd annual Gumtree Art Festival.   I am looking forward to exploring Tupelo because I have never visited before.  I am fortunate to have my husband, my roadie friend, Lynn, and her husband (also my very good friend!) joining me. It makes selling or not selling lots more fun.  Truthfully I do not think I have ever celebrated not selling.

This cow stared at me the whole ten minutes I was taking pictures of her and her friends. I have not seen or painted a lot of grey cows and this one was a beauty. I enjoy experimenting with combinations of colors to get grey. Definitely not just a mixture of black and white. I did not exaggerate the eyelashes on this cow.  I have done that before to add to the cow glamor.  This one had all the makings for a prize winning cow.  She is painted on a 12 x 12 x 2" canvas.

I have enjoyed having this weekend off from doing a show.  My youngest son graduated from college and we celebrated with several family members.  I go to Tupelo, Mississippi next weekend for the Gumtree Art Festival Saturday and Sunday.  Come see me if you are in the area.sold

I feel a little like this dog looks.  A busy time in my life with completing back to back weekend shows.  I have not had a lot of time to paint because of the time involved in that.  This is painted on a 16 x 20 x 2" canvas.

I have some happy news to report.  My husband officially retired today after 33 years in the banking industry.  A big woo hoo for him.  I will tell you in a few weeks whether it is a big woo hoo for me.  Think it will be.  And...my youngest son, Dillon, is graduating from the University of Alabama with a degree in Geology this Friday. I am about to go set up for the Magic City Art Connection show that runs from tomorrow through Sunday. I painted this the day I left for the Tallahassee art show.  Touched it up a little this morning after returning last night. I spotted these calves on my way to North Carolina a few days ago. The little white one followed the black one every where it went.  Guess it was a girl thing. I included another shot to show you that it is painted on a 24 x 36" canvas.

 I wanted to include some pictures of the beautiful LeMoyne Chain of Parks Art Show.  It was a wonderful setting and if it had been 20 degrees warmer it would have been even more wonderful.  I shivered my way through the two days.  Did not remember to bring my parka to Florida.  I had a blast and loved getting to spend time with two long time friends Steve and Hollywood Carter.  My friend's real name is Kathleen but she looks like a hollywood star and is always cooking up a deal of some sort like a Hollywood agent.

So......next weekend is the Magic City Art connection here in Birmingham.  Friday , Saturday and Sunday.  It is held in beautiful Linn Park downtown. My spot is right next to the Art Museum so that will give you a landmark if you would like to come.   

balsam mountain beauty

I took the photo reference for this in Balsam Mountain, North Carolina.  My parents have a house not far from this area and I spotted this herd on my way up last week.  I got some great photos and look forward to painting several of the pictures.  This is painted on a 24 x 24 x 2" canvas.

Does she ever paint anything other than cows?  Yes.  I really do but this is what I am feeling right now.  It should not be too much longer before I get down to the beach and I will probably shift my subject matter then.  But...I love to take pictures of cows on my way to the beach.

I just returned from going on a trip with my Mom to North Carolina and I got some new pictures that I am chomping at the bit to paint.  Beautiful herefords.  I really do need a bumper sticker that says, "I stop for cows."  Feel sorry for the people who travel with me.

I am headed to Tallahassee, FL this coming weekend for the LeMoyne Chain of Parks art show Saturday and Sunday.  We are staying with our good friends , Kathleen and Steve, so I was inspired to name this beauty after her.  I painted a 6 x 6" of this little one before and Kathleen owns it.  Kathleen has been a huge encourager and supporter of my work.  Wish I could carry her around in my pocket.

Me, and my girls III

This is the third time I have painted this image. The original painting belongs to a friend who lives in Huntsville, AL. I can not remember what size I painted it the first time.  The second one was painted on an 11 x 14" canvas and I could have sold it three times in Nashville this past February.  The purchaser was from Charlotte, NC.  This time I painted it on a 12 x 12 x 2" canvas.  It turns out fairly different each time.

I am trying to organize my work for upcoming shows.  The first one I am participating in is this coming Saturday, April 5th.  It is the 33rd annual Mt Brook Art Association Spring Festival.  Say that fast five times. I looked up the phrase "how do you do?" because it has been a while since I have heard it used and it did not make much sense to me when I thought about it.  It is from a website called "phrase finders".

A greeting.

Origin

This greeting was once commonplace, especially amongst the English upper classes, but is now heard less often and is largely rectricted to quite formal occasions. The phrase became one of the touchstones in the separation of the U from the non-U, that is, the separation of the upper classes from the rest. The U contingent had napkins, lavatories and greeted people with 'how do you do'; the non-U had serviettes, toilets and greeted with 'hello'. The proper response to 'How do you do?' was a reciprocal 'How do you do?', as in this exchange from Oscar Wilde's Lady Windermere's Fan, 1892:

'How do you do' has its essence in the early meaning of the verb 'do', which has been used since the 14th century to mean 'prosper; thrive'. I have three shows coming up in April so I am happy to paint some more of my best selling subjects....cows!  Every home needs at least one cow painting. I have painted this photo before on a 6 x 12". This time I chose to paint it on a larger 12 x 24 x 2" canvas.

This is the first day I have gotten back to painting after losing my father.  My Dad had been pretty sick since Christmas. I am thankful to have been able to spend lots of time with him before he died last Sunday.  He was a great man and loved by many but nobody more than his family.  He was very proud of what I was doing with my art and I am grateful to him for much of my creativity.  Sold
