blue morning

This piece is painted on a 2' x 4' canvas.  Hard to appreciate this one unless you see it in person.
This is the last post you will see from me until I am in my house. Need to pack up my paints for a bit.  I am moving next Wednesday and Thursday and then leaving Friday morning for Nashville.  I am participating in a three day art event at Lipscomb Academy.  The timing is not great for me but it will be fun to visit with some artist friends and patrons.  And....my sweet friends, Elizabeth and Mike, who open their beautiful home to me every time I come to Nashville.  Always a good time.

tight knit

My posts may get a bit sporadic for the next few weeks.  Kind of hard to believe it but we are very close to getting in our house.  I need to start packing up some things.  Looking forward to painting in my new studio. I will take a lot of pictures once I am set up.

yella hair

I kept stopping by the image of this yella haired lady when looking through my photos. Finally broke down and painted her. I took her picture when I was in Waynesville, North Carolina.   She was waiting to go on stage with her clogging group and  I think she was sizing up her competition. This is painted on an 8 x 10" gallery wrap.
Hope you all have a great weekend!  Sunny here!!

silver lining

We have had rain here in Alabama for too many days to count.  Needed to paint something from a sunnier time.  This is painted on a 12 x 12" gallery wrap.
I am preparing to participate in an art show in Nashville Feb 1-3.  David Lipscomb sponsors it and 30% of the proceeds go to the school.  I did the show for the first time last year and the school and patrons were so kind and treated the artists like royalty.  Come see me if you are in the area.
I am either moving into my new home right before that weekend or right after.  Interesting timing.  I guess the title of this painting could refer to the sun shining after all the rain or moving into a new home after months of preparation and honestly not too much hardship.

This is painted on an 8 x 8" linen panel.
Hope you have a great weekend!

One of my first painting teachers, John Kelley, has started a video art journal.  He is very talented and has a wealth of knowledge that he is willing to share.  Click on the following to check them out. http://ontheeasel.blogspot.com/

a little cocked

I guess cows cock their head when they are curious about something.  I love it when dogs do that.  What is so cute about a cocked head?  Another one of those mysterious things like holes in your face (dimples) being attractive.
I painted this cow on a 20 x 20" clear primed gallery wrapped canvas.  I feel that the linen color showing through adds to the piece.  You can see an earlier 8 x 8" painting that I did from this same photo.  I could paint this face over and over and not get tired of it.

hasty retreat

I enjoy painting on elogated canvases but they do not photograph very well.  Maybe it is the photographer?  This is painted on a 10 x 20" gallery wrap canvas.

lotsa sheepsa

I took the reference photo for this painting while visiting a cheese farm in Italy. I guess technically it was a sheep farm. I did not see any cheese in the fields. The sheepsa were too preoccupied with eating to look up but I think it made for an interesting painting. I painted this on a 12 x 24" gallery wrap canvas.

looking over

This is the second time I have painted this calf.  I just love the curiousity in his face.  He was peering over some other calves that I deleted.  I will post my previous depiction of him below.  Interesting how my style varies in the two renditions. This time I painted him on a 10 x 10" gallery wrap canvas.sold

brown beauty

One thing that has been very beneficial in living in our apartment with my work literally hanging in every room is that I have had lots of time to analyze how to improve pieces.  Often times I will look at one of my paintings and not be able to put my finger on what it is that prevents me from thinking it is worthy.  This horse has been hanging in my studio (again, a teeny bedroom) for several weeks and I did not like looking at it because it was very harsh.  I worked on a few things yesterday and now I like it.  I mainly worked on softening some edges.  It feels really good when it works out.  Some times I just throw the paintings out and that hurts.
Still thinking we will be moving into our house at the end of this month.  I will probably wait until my studio is set up to post some photos of it.
