My studio has smelled like rotting onions for a couple of weeks now. I knew I wanted to paint them so I put up with the smell. It is scary what I can find left in a bowl on my still life shelf. Most of my still life cloth drapes have residue of something rotten on them. I am not giving you all a very goood impression of me. Oh well.
I gave myself one hour to paint this today. Love that practice. Weeds out too much over work. This is painted on a 6 x 12" linen canvas.
Beautiful onion painting--you have such a good sense of design and what I particularly like is that you made every onion different--different color, different amount of light, different size, shape and position. That's a sign that you really know what you are doing!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous, Carol! It's loose and luscious. Makes me want to paint onions. And I see that i have one with lovely green sprouts. Hmmm......
ReplyDeleteThe end result was definitely worth the smell. Beautiful painting with luscious brushstrokes. Setting the hour timer has really kept this loose and not too much detail.
ReplyDeleteHummm!
Gros bisous
Very nice composition and great result. I love working on long canvases!
ReplyDeleteOnly one hour?? the mark of a master!
Beautiful colors and they certainly have that onion feel to them. I think I can smell them from here, they look so real.
ReplyDeleteOh Carol! I can't say it any better than Kathryn Townsend- these are all different and wonderful! You made me smile- Love the commentary as much as the brushwork!
ReplyDeleteThis is really gorgeous Carol, the others have said it all, but I wanted to add "wow!".
ReplyDeleteGORGEOUS! You made rotten look fresh! Bravo!
ReplyDeleteThis is just beautiful, Carol . . . and the title makes me laugh!
ReplyDeletePhenomenal onions.
ReplyDeleteWonderful! So loose, and great colors. Nice challenge!
ReplyDeleteHas to be one of my favorite onion paintings though, Carol, so I think the rotting smell must have been worth it! LOL I'm not sure I know what rotting onions smell like though...When I paint, I just have to be in the mood to do it or the piece isn't even close to worth keeping. So, if I did paint still lifes, I bet I'd have the same situation you have so I personally can see how this could happen! Anyway, I really think this is a pretty piece!
ReplyDeleteThe composition, brushwork & color are all wonderful, Carol. I currently have smelly flowers in my studio...wanna trade?
ReplyDeleteIt was worth the smelliness! Beautiful painting.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful light and brushwork! So fresh and lively . . . Glad to know there's someone else out there with my housekeeping ability!
ReplyDeleteCarol, these onions don't make me cry! Compostion is wonderful and the brush work shows much confidence! Bravo!
ReplyDeleteBTW, I have added you to my "Blog Roll." Thanks so much for adding me to your :"Blog Roll."
Beautiful painting, awesome light.
ReplyDeleteAnd regarding the rotten vegetable - since I have started my still life paintings, my kitchen is full of vegetable and fruits in all kinds of age.
Gorgeous. Love everything about it; color, light and format.
ReplyDeleteNice and fresh, (the painting that is) - I've taken to putting vegetables in the fridge and or freezer for still lifes and/or making pizza toppings out of the ones I'm tired of painting. Your brushwork is wonderful in this piece!
