junaluska pear

Just got back from a visit with my sister and parents in North Carolina. Picked this pear before I left. Always fun to have a fresh one with leaves. Painted this on a 5 x 7" linen canvas. Still struggling with small canvases. I tend to paint items too large with little background left. Need to remember what Qiang Huang taught and that is to create a stage including the background. I tend to focus on the items and background is an afterthought. Anyway... I am glad to be home after traveling. Hope to paint a good bit this week.

  1. This is such a nicely done piece, Carol.

You must have been around Cherokee NC. I just returned from there yesterday. Too bad we couldn't meet up! Wish I had thought to pick some fruit with leaves attached...I didn't see pears, but I know where there are some great peaches. I will try to remember to do that next month when I return.

  4. Great painting, Carol, and I know what you mean about "background". I too remember what Qiang said, but old habits are hard to break...so I just keep trying!

  5. Funny how some paintings don't read small at all! Love the warmth peeking through next to the cool blues; very well done!

  10. Carol, I love this piece. Not sure what elevates this one so much in my own personal favorites list but I admit that I found myself looking and learning too with this one. I was awed by how detailed and beautiful the bowl itself is...Then I looked at it carefully and I can't really see any detail. Yet it is amazing how it comes together to appear thus. I have to mark this piece as a reference for me to learn new things, I think. This is just delightful and the 'stage' color is gorgeous! Love the leaves too...

  11. I, too, tend to paint the object large and leave out the stage. That is one of my goals, but a hard one! Great piece.
