nice ride

This beauty was parked in front of the villa we stayed in while we were in Florence. I do not know a lot about cars so it took me a while to figure out what make this was. Maybe some of you will have recognized that it was an antique fiat. I saw lots of modern day fiats while we were in Italy but this one was fairly old. Beginning to see several of them in the U.S. now. Our guide in Rome shared with us what fiat stands for.....fix it all the time. That would be fiatt. Sorry if I have offended you fiat lovers. Aesthetically, I think they are great looking. This was lots of fun to paint. It is painted on an 8 x 10" gallery wrap canvas.

  1. We had a Fiat when we lived in Italy. It was a little Fiat 500. They were sort of rounded, like a VW bug, only smaller. We could fit our three little girls on the small, flat back seat (no seat belts!). It had a sun roof, and my husband could stand up and drive. He'd do that in our driveway to the delight of our kids. You've brought back some fun memories for me this morning.

But I came over to talk about your painting. I love the combination of detail and suggestion. Really nice!

  2. A vintage car -- with a vintage look. I really love the color palette you used here, Carol -- very understated and elegant, just like the car!

  3. A car with lots of personality . . . Fun to catch up with your blog! Love your people in Italy paintings—you capture body language very well. I've had a devil of a time painting portraits and want to move on to figures, so yes the charcoal portrait is mine—trying to figure out what's eluding me with color. Thanks for your nice comment. And yes about frustration with verifications—it seems anyone who has updated to the new blog format now has words that are so broken and hard to read.

  4. I looked at the thumbnail and thought "oh, look, that car resembles the car my uncle had in the 70s (in Italy)" and it sure was. It might have been a FIAT 850, but I'm not sure. Pretty!
    Ciao :)

  5. Wonderful feel to this whole painting. The composition is great and the colors soft and appealing- this is just charming. I don't have a Fiat story but have enjoyed hearing the others. Can't believe I missed hearing you have a painting in the HMA Gala! Awesome and congrats to you!! My favorite teacher friend,Nancy Franke is the Featured Artist- she will be coming over for the Gala opening after our workshop. So proud for you both!

  6. I love old cars and old car paintings. We lived in Ankara, Turkey for three years and Fiats were de rigeur. I am loving the look of that Abarthe Fiat on the commercials. I think it is a Fiat. (The mind, she goes.) Beautiful job on this, Carol!
