Deep Thinker

Good morning! the sun is finally shining in Birmingham.
This is a 12" x 24" monotone oil painting. It has a very different feel than most of my rooster paintings. I typically use very bright colors. I like the serene feeling this one has. I doubt roosters are deep thinkers but that is what I named this painting. "Where can I find the juiciest worms?" "Does that hen still think I am handsome?" "Can I out run that coyote?" Who knows?
My goal was to only use different strengths of transparent red oxide. I ended up adding a little burnt umber for the darkest values and a bit of naples for the lightest.

  1. And for some reason, I hear the line, "Duh, which way did he go, which way did he go?!" LOL Beautiful rooster painting, Carol. This would look fabulous in an old farmhouse style or antique look kitchen!

  2. This is one mighty fine looking rooster, and I think he's looking for chicks! Love your color choices and how you combined them. You might also like the Anders Zorn palette if you are not familiar with it...black, white, aliz.crimson, and yel. ochre. Amazing the colors you can achieve with such a limited selection. I played around with it for awhile and it really makes you work on your values. My "Johnny Appleseed" is one with the Zorn palette.

  4. I love this! I think the monochrome touch adds to his grandeur - he's like a distinguished gentleman in an old sepia photograph. Looking forward to following your blog!
